Opayo Payment Integration Options: Form, Server, Direct, and PI Explained

Opayo (formerly Sage Pay, now Elavon) offers various integration methods to suit different business needs. Each method balances control, customisation, and PCI compliance differently.

This guide explains how payments are processed with each Opayo integration option in our plugin, so you can easily see the differences.

Form

  • How it works: A straightforward, entry-level option where customers are redirected to Opayo’s hosted payment page to enter their card details.
  • PCI Compliance: Opayo handles all card data, reducing your PCI compliance scope.
  • Customisation: Limited; the payment page is managed by Opayo.
  • Best for: Merchants seeking a quick and simple setup with minimal PCI requirements.

Server

  • How it works: Payment data is collected on your website and processed via server-to-server communication with Opayo.
  • PCI Compliance: While Opayo processes the payments, this method may require slightly more attention to PCI compliance compared to Form Integration.
  • Customisation: Offers more flexibility; you can embed the payment form via iframe or redirect customers.
  • Best for: Merchants wanting a seamless on-site payment experience with more control.

Direct

  • How it works: Card details are collected directly on your website and securely sent to Opayo via API.
  • PCI Compliance: This method comes with the highest PCI compliance requirements, as your site handles sensitive card data.
  • Best for: Businesses needing complete control over payment processing and branding.
  • Friendly Note: Direct does not currently support WooCommerce checkout blocks.

PI (Payment Integration)

  • How it works: Opayo’s modern Payment Integration API supports advanced features and is designed to offer a flexible, future-ready checkout experience.
  • PCI Compliance: Sensitive card data is handled by Opayo, helping to minimise your PCI scope.
  • Best for: Merchants looking for a modern, secure integration with simple setup and future enhancements on the way.
  • Friendly Note: PI does not currently support WooCommerce checkout blocks.
